AEP SWEPCO needed a safer and more effective way to train its linemen on transformers, power poles, and other essential electrical equipment. At the time, the facility lacked dedicated elevated training platforms, which limited the ability for crews to practice real-world scenarios in a controlled environment.
Without proper mezzanine-level training areas, linemen could not fully simulate the elevated working conditions they experience in the field. Additionally, supervisors had limited visibility during training exercises and were unable to effectively oversee hands-on instruction occurring on power poles and equipment located on the first level of the facility.
This created challenges for safety oversight, skill development, and real-time instruction, all of which are critical when training crews who will eventually work on live electrical infrastructure.
To enhance safety and improve training capabilities, Martin Specialty Coatings (MSC) partnered with AEP SWEPCO to construct two custom mezzanine training platforms within the facility.
These elevated mezzanines were specifically designed to support hands-on lineman training on transformers and other electrical equipment, allowing crews to practice critical skills in an environment that closely mirrors real-world conditions.
Key features of the new training platforms include:
Two enclosed mezzanine structures designed for elevated training exercises
Air-conditioned interior spaces to provide a comfortable and controlled training environment
Large viewing windows that allow supervisors and instructors to monitor training activities below
Strategic positioning to provide clear oversight of both the training equipment and first-floor operations
The design ensures that supervisors can observe, guide, and evaluate linemen in real time, improving the effectiveness of instruction and reinforcing safety procedures.
The new mezzanine training platforms provide AEP SWEPCO with a dedicated, high-performance lineman training environment that enhances both safety and skill development.
With improved visibility and oversight, supervisors can now monitor training activities more effectively while linemen gain valuable hands-on experience working on transformers and elevated power infrastructure.
By investing in these custom-built training mezzanines, AEP SWEPCO has strengthened its ability to prepare crews for real-world electrical work while maintaining the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and operational readiness.
